TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A man is dead after he was struck by a train near the AMTRAK Station.
Charles Heffington, 62, was pronounced dead on scene after police responded to a report of a train and pedestrian collision at around 9:40 p.m. Sunday, according to Sgt. Chris Widmer with the Tucson Police Department.
Widmer tells KGUN9 that the collision took place behind the AMTRAK Station, located at 400 North Toole Avenue.
Union Pacific Railroad police and emergency crews from the Tucson Fire Department responded to the scene to assist.
The initial investigation revealed that the train was traveling westbound and crew members on board the train noticed the man lying or sitting against the outside of the track near the AMTRAK station.
The train operator immediately activated the emergency brake and sounded the horn, but the train was unable to stop in time.
