TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Deputies are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Sunday morning.
Deputy Tom Peine with the Pima County Sheriff's Department tells KGUN9 that a deputy responded to a residence in the 6100 block of North Pepper Tree Lane at around 5:20 a.m. Sunday after someone from the residence called 9-1-1 to report a verbal domestic dispute.
Once deputies arrived on scene, a woman reported that she and her boyfriend were having an argument and that he had been violent with her in the past. She then told the deputies that the boyfriend was in her car and she needed the vehicle to go to work, according to Peine.
Next, deputies walked outside to the car parked in front of the residence in order to talk to the woman's boyfriend, 49-year-old Michael Schuoler, Peine said.
Schuoler sat inside the vehicle and refused to follow the deputies' orders, according to Piene.
Peine tells 9OYS that Deputy Greenman, who was standing on the passenger side of the vehicle, suddently noticed Schuoler pull something from his waistband.
Identifying a potentially lethal threat to his partner, who was standing on the driver's side of the vehicle, Deputy Greenman fired at Schuoler once and struck him. Deputies later learned that Schuoler had pulled a knife from his waistband, Piene said.
Deputies then pulled Schuoler from the vehicle and begand administering first aid until an ambulance arrived on scene. At this time, the deputies noticed that Schuoler suffered a self-inflicted laceration to his neck, according to Peine.
Emergency medical personnel transported Schuoler to the hospital. He is in critical condition.
Peine says Deputy Greenman has been with the Pima County Sheriff's Department since March 2012. He was placed on 72-hour administrative leave, which is standard procedure following this type of incident.
Charges against Schuoler are pending. The investigation is ongoing.
