"Women are very unsafe on the street and one of the most common worries is rape. Having a safe environment to come to makes a huge difference in one's life," says Executive Director, Jean Fedigan.
The facility was named in honor of Sister Jose Hobday who dedicated her life helping the poor.
The prior facility only allowed eleven people but now they will be able to help 35-50 homeless women.
The shelter will provide medical and behavioral services for the women.
Micaias Delgado tells KGUN 9 that she chose Sr. Jose Women's Center after years of going to different shelters.
"They've been a great help to me having to start over, especially pertaining to employment," says Delgado.
Volunteers say with the new facility they won't have to turn any woman away.
