TUCSON, Ariz - Parents speak out about the probe into possible recruiting violations by the Sabino High School baseball team, which was crowned 2018 3-A state champions.
TUSD is conducting the investigation and had hoped to wrap it up by now, but the TUSD superintendent stated there's a delay because of summer schedule conflicts. Parents turned out to last night's board meeting to address the issue.
Sabino High School baseball players and parents filled a portion of the TUSD board room wanting answers. They want to know when the investigation will wrap up.
One parent addressed the board and district, "This has been going on for an awfully long time -- this investigation over 1 parental complaint. My question to you is guys, when is this going to end? Because these guys want answers. I want an answer. I think all you do too."
Another parent addressed a statement made by Superintendent Gabriel Trujillo that part of the delay stems from families been out of town. "That's not true. We've been playing summer baseball with the Tucson Cowboys. Many of the boys are playing sunbelt collegiate league for six now. We've been in town," said the parent.
Trujillo has stated the district would conduct a thorough investigation as the AIA has asked him to do.
The 2nd parent said, "And I hope that when you're done with this that you publicly don't say that following a thorough and full investigation we've come to this conclusion unless you do in fact complete that investigation fully by interviewing everybody," said the parent.
Board member Adelita Grijalva asked Trujillo to provide the board with an update on the investigation as soon as possible. "This issue has come up before with other schools, and in light of the fact that Arizona is an open enrollment district I think we need to look at the policies we have in place as a district to ensure that students and parents who make it a choice to go to a school that's not their home district that they're not penalized repeatedly for that decision."
Trujillo told the board, "We will commit to be back here on August 14th with recommendations."
KGUN9 reached out to Trujillo before noon today for comment. We have not received a response yet.
We'll stay on this and continue to investigate.
