State lawmaker hosts TUSD "Deseg 101" forum

Tucson, Ariz. - A state lawmaker is now stepping into Tucson Unified's decades-long legal battle over desegregation.
Representative Todd Clodfelter of District 10 is hosting a "Deseg 101" forum next week.

He says many of his constituents are concerned about paying higher taxes after the legislature recently adopted a law requiring all deseg taxes be collected as secondary property taxes.

Clodfelter says he wants to give taxpayers the opportunity to ask direct questions to people well-versed in the deseg issue. The "Arizona Tax Research Association", which has been critical of the costs, and superintendent gabriel trujillo are scheduled to attend.

Valerie Cavazos: Are you contemplating any action as a result of what you hear there?
Clodfelter: I would hope there would be action. The main thing I think we're going to find at this event is the community will become a little bit more engaged. They're going to realize this has been going on too long. And they're going to realize their taxes are being affected and they're paying more than they maybe need to pay.

The Deseg 101 forum is July 31st from 6 to 8 pm at Tucson Baptist Church.
